History

The Saurer SGS 4500 (4x2) and SGA 4500 (4x4) were the result of a collaborative effort between Henschel, Magirus, and Saurer. Around 240 of these trucks were produced between 1942 and 1944. This particular Saurer SGS 4500 was utilized by a unit of the Kriegsmarine.

World War II Service

This truck was delivered to the Kriegsmarine in Rudolstadt after the Torpedo Arsenal was relocated from Kiel to Rudolstadt in early 1943 for the underground production of torpedoes. The facility was known as Torpedo Arsenal Mitte (TAM) in Rudolstadt, Thüringen.

Built in Vienna-Simmering, this truck was delivered in 1944. The original identification plate is still intact, and during restoration, traces of the original color scheme were found. It was likely used to transport torpedoes or other cargo on the premises.

Post-War Service

On September 1, 1945, after its military service, the truck was sold by the local authorities to a transport company owned by Albert Krappe (see attached document). The truck remained in use by the company for several decades until the late 1980s.

In the early 2000s, the vehicle was acquired by Christoph Gebhardt, who fully restored it between 2020 and 2021. The restoration was of Class A quality, with much of the original materials preserved, including a large portion of the wood.

The result is a uniquely restored and highly original vehicle. It comes with extensive documentation from the previous owner, who maintained records dating back to 1946, further enhancing its historical value.
